How to approach a tech stack review with a mindset to successfully make a difference, not just do more of the same.
We all know that technology will help our organisation to automate and improve tasks, engage with our prospects and customers as well as visualise our results. However, almost every company we have spoken to claims to have too many, under-utilised or disconnected systems.
As the wave of technology reaches a crest, it’s now important for us to ensure we are not finding ourselves drowning in the system functionality and be sure that we are aligning the capability to the organisations needs.
As technology functionality grows and overlaps in tools, it’s critical to have an educated plan on what systems you need and exactly what functionality you will use and what you won’t – avoiding the rabbit hole of ‘shiny new things’ that don’t enable you to meet your business targets.

Deconstruct
- Forget the tech you have and think about your organisation goals. You will often be fixed on talking about the functionality you have or limitations you face. Approach your thinking with a clear view of what you need to achieve not what you have in place.
Decompose
- Now focus on what you need to achieve as an organisation or function. Think about your desirable channels of communication, not what you have always done, but what you need to achieve your targets.
Design
- Design the perfect tech stack. Easier said that done, but without any limitations (budget, resource or functionality) you can create requirements that are not restricted by what you have always known. A blue sky of tech functionality requirements.
